What is Huntington Disease?

Huntington disease is an inherited neurological condition. That is, a disease of the brain that is passed down through the family line. It is a progressive, degenerative disease. This means that the symptoms gradually worsen over time.

The condition Huntington Disease was first described by George Huntington, a physician in New York, in 1872. It used to be commonly known as Huntington’s Chorea - chorea being the Greek word for dancing and describing the strange movements of the sufferer. Most people now refer to it as Huntington’s disease, Huntington disease or HD.
